For LGBT History month, the Harvard Club of New York presents the award-winning documentary, To A More Perfect Union: U.S. v Windsor. This movie relates the story of the Supreme Court decision which ruled that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the law barring the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages legalized in the states, was unconstitutional. The film chronicles octogenarian Edie Windsor, who sued the government to have her relationship with Thea Spyer recognized, and her attorney, Roberta Kaplan (C’88). Windsor and Kaplan’s legal and personal journeys are told in their own words as well as through interviews with members of their legal team, movement activists, legal analysts, well-known supporters, and their opponents. Director and Producer Donna Zaccaro(B ’87), daughter of the late Geraldine Ferraro, was a longtime, award-winning producer for the “Today” show. She was also the director and producer of Geraldine Ferraro: Paving the Way, a critically-acclaimed documentary about the trailblazer who made history as the first woman to run for national office on a major party ticket. Among other awards, To A More Perfect Union was named Best Feature Documentary at the 2018 Manhattan Film Festival.
